November 2011 NewsW125 Crosthwaite and Gardiner are proud and pleased to have completed the second W125 car. Car number two of a series of five cars being produced was tested at Donington Park in the hands of Kevin Wheatcroft and Rob Hall. The first car was completed in 2009 and delivered to a confidential private collector, so having car number two finished and attracting a great deal of attention is very exciting for everyone involved in the project.
Having obtained 1000's of original factory drawings, the new cars have been built to original specification in minute detail. ![]() Due to modern safety knowledge and advanced material and surface treatment techniques, a few small improvements have been engineered in to the new cars in order to improve safety, reliability and serviceability. Aside from these small changes which are undetectable, the cars are an exact continuation of the originals. Every complicated and intricate detail that was designed with weight reduction, power and speed in mind has been replicated. The detail of the cars is outstanding and goes to explain the 18,000 hours that each car takes to manufacture. On first studying one of the cars, most people are very impressed and then begin to ask where various parts came from. When they are given the answer, 'from a raw billet of aluminium or a handmade sand-cast magnesium pattern which we then machine', they are totally astounded. The 5.6L straight 8, supercharged engine, which was, up until the Formula 1 turbo era, the most powerful Grand Prix engine ever built, has been faithfully reproduced and does not fail to impress today. Delivering 600lbft of torque from 2000rpm the engine is ferocious in sound, feel and power delivery. Every driver who has experienced the newly built engines has been in awe of the immense power available to them.
Now that car two is finished, everyone at C&G is looking forward to completing the rest of the cars and especially the very special streamliner which is sure to be a spectacular car.
